Abstract
Clinicians often suspect that the causes for altered muscle function are not necessarily to be found in the muscle itself. This literature review aims to detect the influence of joint dysfunctions on muscle function. There is a high level of evidence that joint dysfunctions or joint structures influence muscle function. Pain, effusion, osteoarthritis and other joint dysfunctions may result in muscle inhibition or facilitation. There is, however, no clear pattern and the neurophysiological mechanisms remain largely unclear. Passive mobilisation can alter muscle function or activation patterns. Therefore clinicians are strongly recommended to integrate structures other than muscles into their clinical reasoning when treating muscle dysfunctions and to continually evaluate the generated hypotheses by thorough reassessments.
